Character Building

Here is a collection of information that may help when character-building for At the Gates, and references we've touched on in building the game.

  • Heaven: This is the Christian angelic hierarchy. Further information can be found here on all angels in theology, and here for names/hierarchy of angels + demons. Our basis for the game is the Judeo-Christian tradition of Heaven and Hell, but other traditions could be worked in.
  • Hell: And conversely, the Christian demonology with related hierarchy.
  • Other: Here is a list of all 'superhero' abilities used in fiction: whilst At the Gates is not a superhero game, the abilities are very likely in that sort of area. Here is a fairly comprehensive list of legend-creatures that could be tapped for Immortals. Finally, we use the RPG character alignment system as a quick and dirty resource -- it's not something we play fast and hard by, but utilize as reference points. A lot of people find the Tropes rendition helpful.

Inspiration

  • Hellblazer: This is the Wikipedia article on Hellblazer and Constantine. And a wealth of information on another site. Additionally, there is the Hellblazer Wiki site, which is pretty handy.
  • Magic: Here is information on LaVeyan Satanism which we're using as a guide to ritual magic/Occult practice in At the Gates: whilst largely ignoring the principles of this particular church, the idea of Lesser and Greater Magics very much applies. Here is an idea for the Occult as well, Aleister Crowley's ideas and the dramatics certainly works within the game.

The World

  • Here is a guide to the boroughs in London and a little on what they're like. Central London (zones 1 & 2) is generally going to be home to most businesses and entertainment spots, and as you push outwards from the centre, property gets cheaper to live in and you get more floorspace for your money. The transport system is incredibly good (apart from the regular striking) and you'd be using the bus system (yep, those big red buses) and the Tube to get from a --> b, a cab if you can afford them -- London cabbies do not stop for anyone walking across in front of them, and most licensed ones in London are black. If you drive in London, you pay a massive amount for the privilege and rush hour is about three hours long, morning and evening. Most people do not drive, and if they must, it's motorbikes and scooters.

Possible addition: www.palmyria.co.uk/superstition/angelsdemons.htm as a reference point for angelic/demonic hierarchies & names?
